The purpose of the Catholic Cemeteries of Spokane has always been "To serve the members of the Catholic Church and their families; to carry out the religious function of the burial of the dead; and to care for the resting places of the faithful departed."  This remains our primary goal.

The Catholic Cemeteries of Spokane is a non-profit corporation owned by the Diocese of Spokane through the Bishop of Spokane who serves as president and chairman of the board.  The Board of Directors, appointed by the Bishop, consists of five regular members.  The Board engages a manager who has responsibility for administering the policies of the Board and conducting the day-to-day operations of the cemeteries.  The manager is given full authority in selecting and directing the staff to operate the cemetery in its activities.

Catholic Cemeteries of Spokane meets the myriad demands of State and Federal laws and also complies with that body of church regulations known as Canon Law.

Why a Catholic Cemetery?

The history of human burial is as long and colorful as the history of man.

Gauls and ancient Britons drove deep, bottle-shaped shafts into the earth and buried their slaves there in common graves. Egyptians laid their Pharaohs to rest in the great pyramids of Egypt. They believed the soul remained with the mummified body and so took elaborate precautions to preserve the body.

Pagan peoples buried their dead in the earth and erected great pagan temples to stand guard.

The early Christians in Rome used the catacombs for both burial and sanctuary. Here, on the actual tombs of the Apostles and Martyrs they celebrated the Holy Mass.

In the death and Resurrection of our Lord, the Catholic Church sees that the body, as the living temple of the Holy Spirit in life, will be reunited to the soul in immortality.

And so the Catholic Cemetery becomes a consecrated and holy place where the Church receives her dead for safekeeping until the morning of Resurrection.

Your burial in a Catholic Cemetery is at once your devout affirmation of faith and a witness to the Resurrection.
