Do
you have to be Catholic to be buried at the Catholic
Cemeteries of Spokane? |
Holy Cross, St. Joseph and
Queen of Peace Cemeteries are designated primarily for the use
of the Spokane Catholic Community and their families. However
those members of other Christian denominations who express a
desire for committal of their earthly remains at either cemetery
may be accommodated should they agree to abide by the rules and
regulations of the cemeteries.
| |
Is
there an additional charge for graveside committal service
vs. a chapel
committal
service? |
The Catholic Cemeteries of Spokane
do not add an additional charge to the family should they prefer
a graveside committal service. In fact, current liturgical
guidelines encourage the committal service be at or near the
graveside. Of course, inclement weather conditions dictate that
the interment chapel always be ready for a committal service
should a family so desire.

How
long does it take for a memorial to be received and
installed at the burial site? |
Typically, once a flush marker
memorial has been ordered and payment completed, delivery and
placement will take place within approximately four to six weeks.
Crypt and niche fronts are completed within about two to four weeks.
upright monuments, due to their size and other considerations, can
take as long as six months.
| |
Do
you have payment plans? Is cash payment expected when burial
arrangements are made? |
Payment when making
arrangements is always appreciated, but the Catholic Cemeteries
of Spokane do not require cash payment prior to interment. We
can allow as long as sixty days for payment prior to the
imposition of finance charges. This usually provides sufficient
time for families to organize their affairs.
| |
Are
payment plans available for purchases in advance of need? |
Yes, three plans are
available for pre-need purchases: cash at time of purchase; 25%
down payment and balance in 18 equal payments; and 10% down
payment with up to sixty equal payments. With the 25% down/
balance in 18 plan no finance charge is assessed: the 10%
down/balance within 60 month plan does incur a 1% per month
finance charge.

Does
the Catholic Church accept cremation as a viable form for
disposition of the body? Is scattering of the cremated
remains acceptable? |
Yes, the Catholic Church
does recognize cremation as a viable alternative for the
disposition of a deceased human body. For this reason, the
options of cremation lawn burial and above ground niches for
inurnment of cremated remains are available at Holy Cross, St.
Joseph and Queen of Peace Cemeteries.
| |
Can
Purchase of burial space and services be accomplished prior
to actual need? |
Yes, Arrangements can be
made to purchase burial rights and corresponding goods and
services prior to actual need. In fact, for many reasons, this
action is strongly encouraged. Whether considering such as
action from a financial, emotional or practical standpoint, this
is one of the most important decisions an individual or couple
can make, both for themselves as well as for their surviving
loved ones.
| |
Can
the casket be opened at the cemetery? |
Liturgical guidelines
indicate that the casket, once closed at the Church or funeral
home, is not to be reopened. To do so interferes with the
important "closure" aspect of the vigil and funeral mass moments
of the faith journey. On a practical note, security
considerations do not allow opening of a casket at the graveside
because of the need to provide for the safety of all attending
the service.
